Sarah's New "Weeble," The Double Gets Coached

Sarah has a new boat!  Well, new to her.  I've sold my Maas Aero, the Weeble.   It was good to see Sarah out in her.  Weeble shepherding yet another newbie through the intracacies of the single scull.

Here I am demonstrating the one-man Weeble carry.

The Double Gets Coached
Deb had a long distance day, but was kind enough to work us on our technique in the double.  It helped a lot get both of us to keep chest-up at the catch and in sync with each other getting into the water.

After some drills with Deb, we put them to use using our Pose running homework we got at the CrossFit Endurance cert that we went to.

2 rounds:

4 x 30 seconds on : 1 min. off
1 minute drill
2 minutes on

A couple of times the boat was really flying!

KS&C Learn To Row Day, Chasing Deb

Our garage gym, Keweenaw Strength & Conditioning had the clients down to the dock for a "Learn To Row Day."  For the full report, click on the KS&C blog:

Chasing Deb
The weather channel said 16mph winds with worse to come, so we ignored the 6am wakeup and reset it for 7.  Up at 7 and the trees weren't moving, so we got up, dressed and rushed out to the boats.  The water was choppy, but not bad most of the time.

Deb had gotten their foreign students brigade off and rowing and was on the water herself when we arrived.  We were out soon after and followed her to the bridge.  Deb is getting ready for the Head Of The Charles race in October.  She had us pursue her a minute behind from the bridge to the inlet, a 20 minute piece.  We never did catch her.  Our technique still leaves much to be desired; in the choppy water, that really slowed us down.  Still, we got down to a 2:20 split near the end.

Around The Bowl In "Jaws"

Another day in the skinny boat.  The good news is that I arrived back at the dock safe and dry.  The bad news is not really that bad, just that I'm back to rowing like a beginner in the less stable boat.  I wonder if I've been wasting time rowing easily in the wider boat.

Never mind, it is what it is.  There. I've been wanting to say that.  I'm still trying to avoid 'it's all good.' (oops!)  Kirsten and visiting friend Jeff Massey rowed to the Super 8 and back.  I turned around when the wind came up since I'm still skimming the oars.

Jaws And The Ranger

I slept in for a bit, then thought with weather like this I better get out and row.  When I got to the dock, the fog was so thick on the canal that you could not see to the other side.  I planned to take out Jaws and just stay in the inlet.  By the time I was on the water, the fog was lifting already so I rowed around the bowl again.  There is much to learn.  I concentrated on staying erect at the catch, keeping some slight downward pressure on the oar handles on the drive to keep them from digging in. Oh, and not falling in.

I'm very glad I decided not to head down the canal to the bridge.  I was halfway across on my turnaround, when what to my wondering eyes should appear?  The Ranger III headed my way!  I got well out of the way and they were chugging smoothly along, but man!  That was a big wake!  If I had been in the narrow canal, that might have gotten dicey.

I'm glad that I could handle it.  Right now I'm scared/confident; staying very aware and rowing cautiously. It will take some getting used to.

I'll keep you posted.

Jaws

Bob Sharkey has a second boat, appropriately named Jaws.  Coach Dennis worked on the pitch of the starboard oarlock.  It seemed to work well.  The oarlocks had been lowered as far down as possible as well.  The last time I tried it the buttons on my oars would hit the riggers and ride out from the oarlocks - very queasy-making!  Before taking her out, I added a couple of spacers under each oarlock.  That worked, too.

Kirsten was as excited as I was to try out the new boat.  If you don't know me, I'm used to rowing a much wider, much more stable boat.   My single is a Maas Aero named the Weeble.  As in 'they wobble but they dont' fall down.'  Jaws is a narrow racing boat, so any errors in balance can quickly tip you over.  I had a lot of experience from the Weeble to draw on, but I still had to take it slow and one step at a time.  I started out with one stroke at a time, working up later to almost full slide.

We took a little tour around the 'bowl' at our end of Portage Lake.  Later Kirsten manned the camera as I did a row-by.  I'm skimming the oars, but I was pretty happy with my form.  I'm starting up the slide a bit to soon, perhaps.

Later, Kirsten caught Coaches Deb & Dennis returning from their workout.  The wind came up once we got in, so they had more waves to deal with.
