Mountain Biking Downstate

Friday: 10 miles at Mid-Michigan Community College with Kirsten.  We did the perimeter  trail.  Additional inner loops add about 1.4 miles each.  Nice single track, firm ground and a variety of designs.  Worth a visit.  Maybe a few too many narrow tree pass-throughs.

Saturday: 13 miles at Fort Custer in Battle Creek with Jeffy and Kirsten.  The red loop is cool, especially the old WWI trenches.  The blue trail is long stretches of cross-country single track. Nice for families, I thought it was a bit boring.

That was fun!  More mountain biking than I've done in a while.  Just wait until you see what's next!

The Last Few Days, MTB, Rowing

Time to get caught up on what I've been up to.  Kirsten arrived on Saturday the 25th and we drove to Houghton that night.

The schedule for Sunday the 26th featured mountain biking and horseback riding.  We biked the Pilgrim trails at MTU.  Mostly dry with a few mud puddles. I had no trouble, the 29'er went right through if I just kept pedaling.  The mud got the best of Kirsten; perversely her bike stayed clean.

A muddy girl is a happy girl.

Monday, Memorial Day was a three-sport day: Rowing, mountain biking and horseback riding.
Kirsten tried out her new boat.  Deb and Dennis delivered and rigged it!  Kirsten's boat was ready to row.  Mine was out, but the bolts that attach the riggers were nowhere to be found.  I went back home to look for them with no luck.  Back at the docks, Dennis supposed they might be with their stuff.  They were!  I had packed the hardware away with the hardware for the double, which we traded to Deb and Dennis for Deb's single.  Finally rigged, Kirsten was nice enough to hang around while I tried out my boat a little.

The rowing season starts!

Still some snow here and there.

Like they were never apart.

I don't remember if we did anything other than horses on Tuesday.  We both seemed a bit lazy that day.  Darned if I can figure it out.

Wednesday was off.

Today, Thursday, I managed to fit a short row in between rainstorms.  58F and water like glass!  I've got to get my phone waterproof so I can use the Speedcoach app to track my rowing.  A little video research gave me some ideas to apply to the catch.  It was much improved from the last time.  My goals are correct technique and consistent technique.

Happy rower.  I'm all caught up.

CFE Week 4, #1

Kirsten at the park in Lansing.

Run Intervals: week 4: 3x's per week
3 Running drills:
Stable Arm Drill
Carioca: 3 x 10 both directions
Forward Lunge (exaggerated foot pulls on one side) 3 x 10 each
Wall Drill: 3 x 20 on each leg

1x through of:
4 x 1min 30sec repeats @ 100 cadence
1 drill (choice)
1 x 6 minutes @ 94 cadence

We ran together by phone, Kirsten in Lansing and I in Houghton. Here's Kirsten's observations:

"Finally, it's t-shirt weather!  I'm realizing that this running homework is all about turnover - teaching yourself the correct, exact rhythm of footfalls over time.  Not speed, not distance, but rhythm.  Only after building endurance for this rhythm can you start to play with an increase in forward lean to increase speed.  Seems easy for about 2 minutes at this point, but after that it is real work.  The 30 second sprints were fun!  Finished up the morning with presses and pull-ups."

Ain't she something!

My pace for the 6:00 piece:

10:55 / mile

Kirsten's pace was faster, I'm sure.

CFE Week 2, #1

Here we are, 'together.'

Very interesting workout today.  Kirsten was in Lansing, I was in Houghton, but Kirsten wanted us to run together.  So we kept together by cell phones, using the earphones to go 'hands free.'
I provided the interval timer and Kirsten ran the metronome for cadence.  It worked amazingly well!  We could talk (when we could actually put words together) and hear nearly as well as if we were right next to each other.  Cool!

CFE: Short Intervals

I forgot to take any pictures today.  Here's my Mom doing her WOD at CrossFit Worthy in Mount Pleasant.  She's 81.

CFE Warmup

Drills:
  • Legs only.
  • Hop drill.
  • V1 with 2 poles per side.

WOD: Short Intervals
Repeat :30 on :30 off until form/pace deteriorates.

CW: My form deteriorated on the first interval!  A slight downhill, going fast and I overcommited the leg pushes.  A fall is a sign of bad form, isn't it?  Never mind, I got up and kept going.  7 intervals total.  Here's the data:

166m,  2:58.8/km
170m,  2:53.0/km
138m,  3:33/km
113m,  4:18.8/km
154m,  3:09.0/km
162m,  3:05.2/km
167m,  2:57.6/km

During the last one, I could feel my technique slipping a bit, so that was it.  I'm not worried about the times, the terrain and techniques were quite varied. 20F, Icy crusty snow with 1/4" shavings on top.  Faster but a bit dicey.

MotionX-GPS Track: MTU: What Goes Down

Hello,

Charles White uses MotionX-GPS on the iPhone and is sharing with you the following track:

Jan 27, 2013 2:44 pm, 30F, SSE5, 63%. Snow packed. Starting at MTU, Skidder, Down Under and Nara Trails' Ridge Loop. Of course, the hardest bits were the steep uphill sections. I stopped to rest after each one. What I think I can do better: a much deeper squat into the ankles with knees out and hips forward. You folks with more skiing and coaching experience, please let me know if I'm in the right track. I also got a handle on sticking to good form after going over the crest - the flat ski gives a better glide and more distance for the effort. Fun? Every day above ground is a good one.

MotionX-GPS Track: Swedetown: Kirsten And The Three Bears

Hello,

Charles White uses MotionX-GPS on the iPhone and is sharing with you the following track:

Jan 19, 2013 2:32 pm, 29F. Lotsa fresh snow, first power grooming. We got out the good skis - yay! Snow was soft packed with powder on the sides. No wind to speak of until we rounded the horn on Papa Bear, then we had a nice stiff breeze pushing us up the hills. I found a kind of middle gear for long gradual uphills. Engaging from the core on the poles with shortened arm strokes helped the legs as well. It was great skiing with my sweetie!

MotionX-GPS Track: Road biking in January!

Hello,

Charles White uses MotionX-GPS on the iPhone and is sharing with you the following track:

Jan 12, 2013 12:52 pm in Lansing. 58F, WSW14, 55%. Roads slightly damp, muddy in spots. We tried out cold weather biking gear, mostly for the wind. Crazy weather. I hope next week brings enough snow and gold for skiing in the UP. We heard the last bit of the carillon concert at MSU - cool! I forgot to turn my GPS back on.

MotionX-GPS Track: Swedetown: I'd Turn Back If I Were You!

Hello,

Charles White uses MotionX-GPS on the iPhone and is sharing with you the following track:

Jan 6, 2013 2:58 pm, 20F, WNW7, 69%. Snow mostly packed. Except for thin spots at the beginning of Mama Bear, she's ok. Papa bear is much worse. Definitely rock skis. Me, I packed on some distance. I kinda stunk, too. Lots of stopping. I've identified some issues to deal with. Mobility, external rotation with hips forward. Stamina, especially shoulders. Most important, I've got to work out more often. At anything. Quite fun, though, in a sort of brain-addled way. Saw Terry and Shoe in my way out!
