Changes

Real exciting stuff.  Nope, no reality TV.  No backstabbing politics.  Just cool stuff.

Deb Kamrad introduced Kirsten and I to Crossfit last Spring sometime.
Soon after finishing a workout gasping on the floor, we figured that we had better learn more about this stuff.
Enter Crossfit.com.  It's an open source website featuring a total fitness program.
I could write a lot about what it is and what it isn't.  Instead, just go to Crossfit.com and check it out.  One word of warning; The workout of the day (WOD) posted on the main page is meant to challenge the fitness of elite level athletes.  For us mortals, look on the left.  Look for the links that come out of 'Start Here.'

Anyway, Kirsten and I are hooked.  The workouts are different each day.  You keep learning to do new stuff.  We built a Crossfit gym in our garage.  We've even had friends over to do a Sunday WOD.

Along with the exercise program, Crossfit promotes the Zone diet (zonediet.com) as a way of eating for performance.  It's made a difference for us; losing fat, more alert, less sleep, more energy, quicker recovery.  Now some of Kirsten's co-workers are starting to Zone.  My mom came to visit, wanted to eat the way we're eating; now she Zones at home.

Finally, I've withheld my last log posts until I've written about changes we've been making.  Because Crossfit aims at all-around fitness, some sports have created offshoots of Crossfit.  During the week Kirsten and I have been using Crossfitendurance.com interval workouts for our morning rowing.  A very different take on training for endurance; do main-site Crossfit workouts, then add three days per week for your endurance sport - an interval day, a pace/time trail day and another interval day.  As you'll see from the log, the workouts tend to be shorter and intense.  That's great for us; now we can finish a morning workout!  On the weekends we do whatever Deb & Dennis have cooked up for us.

Crossfit has been quite a success so far.  Crossfit Endurance, I'm not sure.  It's designed for triathaletes, ultramarathoners and rowers, but I don't yet see how the shorter workouts will translate to long-distance success.  I'm going to stick with it, except for Deb's time trials.  We'll see with indoor racing how it works out.  I think I'll know by February.

This is getting long.  I'll post the remaining workouts in the posts to follow.

Ciao,

Charles

Workouts 6/13/09 to 7/27/09

Stuff you might want to check out especially:
2 x 5K  Every Saturday.  Look for the fast piece, see if it improves week to week.
Any workout with comments. Weather, technique, stories. Especially see 'Surf's Up!'

Note: Most workouts until about September were Deb's assignments.  Rowing weekdays in the early morning before work, we often didn't get enough time on the water to finish them.

The Experiment, Part II

Yippee!  That worked.  it stretches the format of the web page a bit.  Please use  the contact page and let me know how that works for you.
Kirsten tried to edit my log with the 'delete' and 'submit changes' button, but it didn't allow her to.  Please let me know if you can.  That would put my log data at risk.

Try this:  click on the Google map ( I've never tried the other maps.)  You can see the *exact* route that I took, with interval start and stop markers.  Missing portions means I stopped rowing and just coasted.

Try this, too: go down to the interval details table.  click on 'chart' / 'view'  A summary of the interval shows up, but wait...
Then you get a graph.  that shows the relationship between time, stroke rate and speed.

I'm very excited, this is so cool!  An interactive blog!  8^)

But maybe you don't want to see *all* of my workout posts.
Let's try this.  Here is (I hope) a summary page of workouts, from 6/6/09 to 6/13/09.  The listings are chronologically backwards.  To see the detailed post like last time, click on the link. (I'm assuming that it will show up.)

More luck, here goes:

A most wonderful invention.

The clouds will part soon, I promise.  First I wanted to try this post.  By way of explanation;
In a previous post I waxed nearly romantic about the cool Speedcoach(tm) that we have when we row the double, which is wired for it.  For the gizmo to work, the boat must have a magnet under one seat and an impeller under the boat in the water.
It gives time, distance and stroke rate info.

-That was then.  This is now:

I have a Speedcoach(tm) app on my iPhone!  it uses GPS, for location and distance, accelerometers for stroke rate along with time.  Best of all, no wiring required!
I had to get a waterproof case for the phone. I use velcro and a lanyard to attach it to the boat.  Now I can use it on any boat.  Even my Aero.
The practices upload to my Facebook page, where Speedcoach(tm) has a nifty log app.  I can view results as numbers, download them, see my workouts graphed, even view my route on Google maps!
The downside I see is that the app cannot account for currents in the water; GPS logs geographical distances.  Going the same way should give comparable results, though.

So here's the experiment.  I'm going to try to copy a workout from my speedcoach log.  Then you and I can see how it copies into the blog.

Here is the earliest entry, dated 6/6/09.  Wish me luck!

Just where in the *heck* have I been?

Sorry folks if you were following this blog. I'm still around, still
rowing. I've been posting workouts and things in other places. If
you look through the blog and our site here, it looks like we've
hardly rowed.

So, I am determined to catch you up. From the start of the season to
our race last weekend. I'll get you news, workouts, progress, results
and some description, too.

First, let's cover most of the Summer. Too cold, too windy. There,
that about says it. After rowing at Craftsbury Sculling Camp in 50
degree weather, we had decided on that as our minimum temp to row.
This Summer, however, we revised it downward to 40, using the double.
It's very stable, keeping the risk of tipping and hypothermia low.

So, that's the bad news. Next entry, the clouds part, the angels sing
and we get out on the water and row!

Ciao,

Charles
